NO MORE BOOKS AT LINCOLN SCHOOL

Costa Rican private institution invests $ 1.5 million in business agreement with Apple.

No more traditional books, or notebooks, or pencils since two weeks ago, the main instrument of study for more than 1,300 students from Lincoln College is, an iPad 3.

With the device, manufactured by the company Apple, the Lincoln students will now be able make notes, view and interact with digital books (eBooks), watch videos related to each subject and do complex mathematical calculations.

Moreover, each iPad can connect wirelessly to smart boards of the institution, located in Santo Domingo de Heredia, show their presentations, tasks and even clear up any doubts.

The innovative project is called "Kids Cannot Wait" and was implemented through a partnership with Apple and its business model "Hardware as a Service".

This plan took hold late last year, after exploring similar educational models such as the Archbishop McCarthy School in Miami, USA. "Kids Cannot Wait" is requiring an investment of $ 1.5 million distributed over the next three years.

Under this scheme, the provider owns the equipment ( they are rented monthly ) and provides a security service, maintenance, replacement (for damage), funding and training for teachers.

The Lincoln School is the first school in Central America to implement this project. This step  shows a change as technology is bringing about a different way of teaching lessons.

In addition, the interaction with the content, the use of self-correcting interactive tests and the use of cameras and microphones for multidisciplinary projects, are among other advantages of using this technology.

Another point to be taken into account with the initiative has to do with cost savings related to buying books. While a traditional textbook can cost between ¢ 25,000 and ¢ 55,000, an e-book has an average price of ¢ 7,000 and downloading an application has a value that can range from free up to ¢ 10,000.
